Fan Zhang, PhD Google Scholar | ORCID | Linkedin | Twitter | Bluesky
Assistant Professor and Principal Investigator (PI)
Department of Medicine Rheumatology and Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) Center for Health AI
⭐️ Fan has received multiple NIH and foundation grants as PI, including an NIH NIAMS R01, the NIH AMP-AIM Team Science Leadership Scholars Program, support from the NIH Office of Women’s Health and the NIH Office of Data Science Strategy, and an NIAID P01 as a Project Lead, along with funding from the Arthritis Foundation, the Arthritis National Research Foundation, and PhRMA.
⭐️ Fan did her Postdoc research with Prof. Soumya Raychaudhuri on using computational single-cell multi-omics to study autoimmune diseases at Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Broad Institute of Harvard/MIT (2017 - 2021). In the NIH-funded Accelerating Medicines Partnership Rheumatoid Arthritis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (AMP RA/SLE) network, Fan leads on developing computational strategies to integrate single-cell multimodal across diseases to define phenotypes of tissue inflammation.
⭐️ Before that, Fan completed her Ph.D. (2013-2017) from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Massachusetts. She developed novel statistical machine learning models in the fields of variational Bayesian inference and mixed-membership matrix factorization with Prof. Patrick Flaherty, Associate Professor at the UMass Amherst Dept. of Mathematics and Statistics, to characterize patient heterogeneity using large-scale genomic data.
